April 2007 Safety Lesson Plan Protective Eyewear

Verizon requires its employees to wear wraparound protective eyewear whenever a potential hazard to the eye(s) exists. This Verizon safety lesson plan outlines what type of protective eyewear must be worn when performing work operations or in the vicinity of others performing work operations or when exposed to conditions that present a potential hazard to the eyes.


September 2007 Safety Advisory

A Verizon employee was seriously injured while performing a pole placement and cable attachment operation alongside a road. The new pole had been set in place and the crew had begun attaching existing plant to the new pole. While in the process of using the derrick to raise the cable to the new pole, the cable broke free and the employee who was working in an aerial bucket was struck by the falling cable. As a result, the employee suffered a broken jaw and laceration on his chin requiring stitches.


August 2007 Safety Advisory

On July 16, 2007, a Central Office technician with over 40 years of service was driving south toward a "T" uncontrolled intersection. As the employee was preparing to make a left in the company vehicle (Dodge Neon), he was struck on the driver's side by a Dodge Durango. Emergency responders had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the door and cut the vehicle's seat beat in order to get the employee out.


August 2007 Safety Advisory

Recently a Customer Ops. Technician with a little over a year of service fell approximately 15 ft. from a pole. The technician reported testing the pole for voltage before ascent. Once aloft, at working height, the employee determined the pole to be unsafe. Upon decent the technician made contact with an exposed ground and received a 150 volt shock causing him to fall to the ground. Employee remembers receiving a shock and being unable to release his grip, but does not remember falling. Fortunately, the employee did not suffer any serious injuries.


April 9th Safety Advisory

On April 9, 2007 an Outside Plant Technician was seriously injured while attempting to remove a plant placer that had become stuck in mud.
